Maryland Issues Insurance Scam Warning for Businesses *Centurion Insurance AFS*

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is warning of an insurance-related scam targeting small painting, construction, and cleaning businesses.

The fraudulent offers may be received by email, text message, or phone call.

MIA advises businesses that are contacted by anyone offering to purchase general liability or workers’ compensation insurance to not give out any information or make any payments until verifying that the offer is legitimate.

The MIA suggests businesses should independently verify the agent’s or broker’s contact information by online on the MIA’s website and should not use the contact information company shown in the offer because it may be fake. Business may use the producer search feature on MIA’s website to verify that the producer is licensed and find the producer’s correct contact information. Then using the contact information, businesses should contact the producer to verify whether the offer is legitimate.

Businesses can also verify that the insurance company named in the offer is legitimate using the company search on MIA’s website and then contact the company to verify that the quote is legitimate.
